INTRODUCTION TO GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
About the course
This session will focus on the role and purpose of government affairs activity; how to navigate key political moments; and the types of tactics that can be used to make yourself heard in Westminster. It will be of particular interest to those who are new to government affairs, or who are starting to take responsibility for government affairs alongside another functions. More experienced members are also invited to learn alongside their teams, and to take the skills back to their colleagues.

AN INSIDERS’ GUIDE TO POLITICS
In this session you will hear from people who have direct experience of working in politics or in government, likely to include those with experience as a Special Adviser, working for an MP, and as a senior Whitehall official. This will give attendees insight into their priorities and ways of working; and how best to influence them.
Hear what life is really like for those working in the heart of government
Understand the pressures which politicians and officials face and the opportunities they’re looking for
Lean how to plan activity which grabs political attention
This will look at the government’s likely future legislative programme; the process for bills being developed and going through Parliament; and how industry may feed into the process. The session will be held at a point when the House of Commons is focused on domestic legislation, and will look at live bills which are likely to affect the asset management industry.

MAKING THE MOST OF PARTY CONFERENCE
Party conference is one of the most high-profile points in the year for government affairs teams, but it’s a unique environment which can be an expensive investment and is not always straightforward to navigate. This session will unpick which teams will gain the most from attending party conference; the types of networking and events which can be the most valuable there; and how to make the most of your time at conference. This session will be most valuable for government affairs teams who already attend party conference, or to help teams who are considering attending, and weigh up whether it is a good use of resources.
